These Old Mountains

Following on from last week’s workshop, I worked on completing the below poem, whilst tucked away north of the border!

These old mountains
After Edwin Cullen

These old mountains are soldiers,
ready to defend or attack
at Nature’s bidding.

These old mountains are teachers,
versed in the history of these isles –
listen to their tales.

These old mountains will challenge you,
testing your every strength,
if you choose to try.

These old mountains are your reward,
giving you space to be you,
the freshest air to breathe.

These old mountains are our guardians,
loyal and steadfast to the end.
We should return the favour.

Attended an excellent workshop this morning, with Jessica Wortley, which really got the inspiration flowing. The theme was ‘mountains’, and one of the exercises included a list of climbing routes. As somebody who definitely prefers looking at mountains from the comfort of a valley-based pub, rathering than clambering over the top of them, I found this list great in terms of the names, and came up with the following first draft, which I think I’m going to develop with more names once I find more that I like.

The Climb

“I’m going to beat Temptation,”
comes the assertion, so bold and brave.
But he didn’t quite manage Crab Wall,
and was defeated by The Wave.

He declared himself Brutally Handsome,
and cried No Surrender to Liberty.
But on Jackdaw Crack left a Hanging Rib,
and from Rough Passage chose to flee.

Very much TBC!!
